I'M BRENDA STONEHOUSE

I have always been a creative person but the first time I picked up a brush and put oil paint on a canvas I knew I was an artist.

I went to college for Graphic Design and enjoyed the variety and challenge of it. I worked as a designer for a few years for printing companies and newspapers until my career took a different turn. My father, who became an artist later in life, introduced me to oil painting. I love the vibrancy and depth of the colours, the richness and texture of the paint and the way I’m able to depict light and shadow.

My oil paintings capture the calmness and serenity of simple moments. The petals of a flower, the ripples of water, the coolness of the forest. I am happy to be able to share these moments with you through my paintings.

Inspirations

I have been lucky to live in many areas of Ontario, Canada and I am drawn to the beauty of nature. Trails, lakes, fields and forests provide me with endless inspiration. My garden is one of my favourite places – the brilliant colours, the variety of textures and the play of light and shadow make every visit to the garden unique.

Techniques

I begin with an orange underpainting and then draw out the image. The next layer is for colour blocking where I focus on the lights and darks and determine the values. The next layer (or two) is when I add more detail, sharpen edges and deepen the contrast. Some paintings are completed with 3 layers while others need a couple more to achieve the result I’m looking for.

My paintings are part of collections around the world. I have participated in exhibitions including Six Degrees of Freedom at the Etobicoke Civic Centre Gallery, the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival, Art by the Lighthouse in Niagara-on-the-Lake and many more.
